Fieldwork in the Hotton Cave

On 7th of April 2023, a speleothem core was taken in a flowstone in the non-touristic part of the Hotton cave. It is located ~2 meters above the river and was covered with a clay layer during the 2021 flood. The core shows several clay layers incorporated in the calcite, showing that not only in 2021, but also in more ancient times, this place was flooded. However, also periods without flooding occurred. An even older stalagmite was dug from the mud deposit underneath the flowstone. These speleothems are now investigated to retrieve past flooding periodicity.
